Comfort Levels

Remember that comfort level is subjective. A mattress that’s soft and plush to one person may be firm to another. Someone once said that comfort is what you feel when you go to sleep and support is what you feel when you wake up. When your bed is firm or soft, that has to do with comfort. How well your body and spine are aligned throughout the night has to do with support. A bed can feel soft yet still be supportive. Comfort is determined by the top layers and support is determined by what is under those layers. When the two mesh together in perfect harmony, that’s when you have found the perfect mattress.

When choosing your comfort level, consider the following four options:

  • Firm
  • Cushion Firm
  • Plush
  • Ultra Plush

Materials

Once you decide what comfort level is most suitable for you, you will be one step closer to finding the mattress that you need. All mattresses are not created equal. In fact, they can differ quite drastically based on the materials used to make them.

Mattress Materials. Memory Foam

Memory Foam

Memory Foam is a polyurethane foam that is the ultimate in conforming and cradling comfort. Offered in various comfort levels from firm to soft, its unique properties allow it to perfectly support your body regardless of weight, size or body shape. It is weight and temperature sensitive which means that each individual’s weight and body temperature will soften the foam slightly so it perfectly conforms to every curve and nuance of your body, then return to its original form; thus the term “memory foam”.

Gel

Gel is a substance that improves the supportive properties of the mattress. It can either be infused into the foam or exist as a separate layer. When gel is infused into memory foam it can also have the added benefit of increasing air circulation in the foam, which could keep you slightly cooler when you sleep. Infusing gel into memory

Innerspring

An innerspring is a tempered steel, coiled spring, usually with 4-5 twists, that is designed to support weight while lying on the bed. This manufacturing technique has been around since the 1800’s and is still used in today’s bedding. Quality innerspring mattresses have hundreds and hundreds of coiled springs to maximize conformability. Quality upholstery and multiple layers of foams are then placed onto the spring unit to achieve various levels of firmness and comfort.

Hybrid

A hybrid bed is simply an innerspring mattress with multiple layers of specialty foams added for conforming comfort. Specialty foams include memory foam, gel-infused memory foam, latex, super-soft polyurethane foams or a combination of these foams. A hybrid gives you the sleep benefits of specialty foam combined with the “springy feel” of an innerspring mattress.

Tempur

Tempur material is composed of millions of moveable cells, designed to cushion and support your body during sleep. It is sensitive to body temperature and weight, so it conforms to your body contours, distributing your body weight and allowing you to fully relax. .

Understanding Foundations and Adjustable Beds

  1. The Foundation is essentially what we call the box spring.
  2. A foundation provides support and raises the mattress.
  3. Foundations have become more durable over the years.
  4. You have two choices, low profile (5-inch height) or standard height (9-inch height).
  5. Foundations are not required for a solid-top “true” platform bed.
Fun Tip

When deciding on a foundation, measure the height of the mattress and add that number to the height of the foundation to get the total sleep set height. Compare that number to your existing sleep set height to decide which foundation is right for you.

Adjustable Bed

Considering an Adjustable Bed?

An adjustable bed is a lifestyle bed. More and more, people are discovering the practical benefits of owning an adjustable base. From reading in bed and watching TV to doing your nails or playing with your pet, an adjustable bed gives you the flexibility that you need for your ever evolving life. When you consider the fact that adjustable beds can also reduce snoring, improve circulation and breathing and help sooth an aching back, you may just decide that this is the right option for you.
